Monday, 14 September 2026…At a time when the divine life, teachings and spiritual legacy of Neem Karoli Baba are winning the hearts of audiences across the country through the hugely successful film Hanuman Ansh, a disturbing question is being raised from Lucknow: can a person facing serious questions over his financial affairs continue to occupy positions of authority in institutions functioning in the revered name of Baba?
Renowned Social, RTI and IGRS activist Urvashi Sharma, who describes herself as a deeply devoted follower of Baba Neem Karoli, says the question is not merely administrative but one of faith, morality and public trust.
Hanuman Ansh, inspired by the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, has become a major theatrical success and is now expanding its reach internationally. Reports say the film has achieved extraordinary box-office success, while its spiritual message of devotion, service and faith has resonated strongly with audiences.
Against this extraordinary resurgence of public interest in Baba's life, Sharma says she is deeply pained to see a tainted retired bureaucrat such as Sadakant Shukla associated with institutions carrying the name and legacy of Neem Karoli Baba.
The question being raised is blunt.
If Baba's life represents simplicity, devotion, service, sacrifice and spiritual purity, should an individual facing serious public questions be permitted to occupy a position of authority in a trust or temple established in Baba's name?
Publicly available records and reports have for years associated Sadakant Shukla with the management of Hanuman Setu Mandir and Baba Neem Karoli Ji Maharaj Ashram, Lucknow. Government records have also documented the existence of the Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir Trust and Baba Neem Karoli Ji Maharaj Ashram at Hanuman Setu.
The controversy surrounding his association is not new. A December 2022 report specifically carried a demand for the removal of Sadakant Shukla from Hanuman Setu Mandir, Baba Neem Karoli Ji Maharaj Ashram and Shri Sankat Mochan Hanumanji Mandir Trust.
More serious questions have subsequently emerged concerning his financial affairs.
A complaint submitted before the Central Board of Direct Taxes sought verification of information concerning properties allegedly linked to Sadakant Shukla in Uttarakhand, including the possibility of benami holdings or use of intermediaries.
But the official response is significant. The Income Tax Department recorded that the matter was not an ordinary grievance but a Tax Evasion Petition, and stated that it had been registered for action under the prescribed CBDT procedure.
At the same time, public reports have identified a Dr. Sadakant Shukla as Chairman of the Kainchi Hanuman Mandir and Ashram Trust in Uttarakhand.
The issue becomes even more sensitive because the Uttarakhand High Court has itself taken cognisance of concerns surrounding the management of Kainchi Dham, with proceedings concerning allegations including financial opacity and management irregularities.
For Sharma, a Hindu Brahmin woman and self-described devotee of Neem Karoli Baba, the matter has become deeply personal.
“When the entire country is watching Baba's divine life on the silver screen and millions are being inspired by his message of devotion, service and surrender, it is painful for a devotee to see people surrounded by serious questions occupying positions in institutions established in Baba's sacred name,” Sharma says.
She has therefore publicly demanded the immediate removal of Sadakant Shukla from the Kainchi Dham Trust, Uttarakhand, and from the management of Hanuman Setu Mandir and Baba Neem Karoli Ji Maharaj Ashram, Lucknow, at least until his appointment, assets, financial disclosures and institutional role are independently and transparently examined.
Sharma is also demanding public disclosure of the relevant trust deeds, amendments, appointment resolutions, trustee records, statutory filings and financial records, so that devotees and the public can know exactly who controls these institutions and under what legal authority.
Her argument is simple but pointed.
Neem Karoli Baba belongs to the devotees. His temples and ashrams are symbols of faith, service and spiritual purity. No individual should be allowed to become bigger than the institution, and no controversial office bearer should be allowed to cast even a shadow over Baba's name.
As Hanuman Ansh carries Baba's story from theatres in India to audiences overseas, Sharma's demand now puts a very different question before the trustees:

प्रसिद्ध सामाजिक, आरटीआई और आईजीआरएस कार्यकर्ता उर्वशी शर्मा, जो स्वयं को बाबा नीम करोली की गहरी श्रद्धालु बताती हैं, का कहना है कि यह सवाल केवल प्रशासनिक नहीं, बल्कि आस्था, नैतिकता और जनविश्वास से जुड़ा हुआ है.
नीम करोली बाबा के जीवन और शिक्षाओं से प्रेरित हनुमान अंश बड़ी सिनेमाई सफलता हासिल कर चुकी है और अब अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर भी अपनी पहुंच बढ़ा रही है. रिपोर्टों के अनुसार फिल्म ने असाधारण बॉक्स ऑफिस सफलता हासिल की है, जबकि भक्ति, सेवा और आस्था का इसका आध्यात्मिक संदेश दर्शकों के बीच गहराई से प्रभाव डाल रहा है.
बाबा के जीवन में जनता की इस असाधारण पुनः बढ़ती रुचि के बीच शर्मा का कहना है कि सदाकांत शुक्ला जैसे दागदार सेवानिवृत्त नौकरशाह का नीम करोली बाबा के नाम और विरासत से जुड़ी संस्थाओं से संबद्ध होना उन्हें गहराई से पीड़ा पहुंचाता है.
उठाया जा रहा सवाल सीधा है.
जब सभी जानते हैं कि बाबा का जीवन सादगी, भक्ति, सेवा, त्याग और आध्यात्मिक शुचिता का प्रतीक है, तो क्या गंभीर सार्वजनिक सवालों का सामना कर रहे किसी व्यक्ति को बाबा के नाम पर स्थापित किसी ट्रस्ट या मंदिर में अधिकार का पद संभालने की अनुमति दी जानी चाहिए?
सार्वजनिक रूप से उपलब्ध अभिलेखों और रिपोर्टों में वर्षों से सदाकांत शुक्ला का संबंध हनुमान सेतु मंदिर और बाबा नीम करोली जी महाराज आश्रम, लखनऊ के प्रबंधन से बताया जाता रहा है. सरकारी अभिलेखों में हनुमान सेतु स्थित श्री संकट मोचन हनुमान मंदिर ट्रस्ट और बाबा नीम करोली जी महाराज आश्रम के अस्तित्व का भी उल्लेख है.
उनके जुड़ाव को लेकर विवाद नया नहीं है. दिसंबर 2022 की एक रिपोर्ट में विशेष रूप से हनुमान सेतु मंदिर, बाबा नीम करोली जी महाराज आश्रम और श्री संकट मोचन हनुमानजी मंदिर ट्रस्ट से सदाकांत शुक्ला को हटाने की मांग की गई थी.
इसके बाद उनके वित्तीय मामलों को लेकर और अधिक गंभीर सवाल सामने आए हैं.
केंद्रीय प्रत्यक्ष कर बोर्ड के समक्ष प्रस्तुत एक शिकायत में उत्तराखंड में सदाकांत शुक्ला से कथित रूप से जुड़ी संपत्तियों से संबंधित सूचनाओं के सत्यापन की मांग की गई थी, जिसमें बेनामी संपत्तियों अथवा बिचौलियों के माध्यम से संपत्तियों के इस्तेमाल की संभावना भी शामिल थी.
लेकिन आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया महत्वपूर्ण है. आयकर विभाग ने दर्ज किया कि यह मामला साधारण शिकायत नहीं बल्कि टैक्स चोरी याचिका है और बताया कि इसे निर्धारित सीबीडीटी प्रक्रिया के तहत कार्रवाई के लिए पंजीकृत किया गया है.
इसी समय, सार्वजनिक रिपोर्टों में डॉ. सदाकांत शुक्ला को उत्तराखंड स्थित कैंची हनुमान मंदिर और आश्रम ट्रस्ट का अध्यक्ष बताया गया है.
मामला और अधिक संवेदनशील इसलिए हो जाता है क्योंकि उत्तराखंड उच्च न्यायालय ने स्वयं कैंची धाम के प्रबंधन से जुड़े चिंताओं का संज्ञान लिया है, जिसमें वित्तीय पारदर्शिता और प्रबंधन में अनियमितताओं सहित आरोपों से संबंधित कार्यवाही शामिल है.
शर्मा के लिए, एक हिंदू ब्राह्मण महिला और स्वयं को नीम करोली बाबा की श्रद्धालु बताने वाली व्यक्ति के रूप में, यह मामला बेहद व्यक्तिगत बन गया है.
“जब पूरा देश पर्दे पर बाबा का दिव्य जीवन देख रहा है और करोड़ों लोग उनके भक्ति, सेवा और समर्पण के संदेश से प्रेरित हो रहे हैं, तब एक श्रद्धालु के लिए यह देखना पीड़ादायक है कि गंभीर सवालों से घिरे लोग बाबा के पवित्र नाम पर स्थापित संस्थाओं में पदों पर बैठे हुए हैं,” शर्मा कहती हैं.
इसीलिए उन्होंने सार्वजनिक रूप से उत्तराखंड के कैंची धाम ट्रस्ट तथा लखनऊ के हनुमान सेतु मंदिर और बाबा नीम करोली जी महाराज आश्रम के प्रबंधन से सदाकांत शुक्ला को तत्काल हटाने की मांग की है, कम से कम तब तक, जब तक उनकी नियुक्ति, संपत्तियों, वित्तीय खुलासों और संस्थागत भूमिका की स्वतंत्र एवं पारदर्शी जांच नहीं हो जाती.
शर्मा संबंधित ट्रस्ट डीड, संशोधन, नियुक्ति प्रस्ताव, ट्रस्टी अभिलेख, वैधानिक दाखिले और वित्तीय अभिलेखों को सार्वजनिक करने की भी मांग कर रही हैं, ताकि श्रद्धालु और आम जनता यह जान सके कि इन संस्थाओं का वास्तविक नियंत्रण किसके पास है और किस कानूनी अधिकार के तहत है.
उनका तर्क सरल लेकिन स्पष्ट है.
नीम करोली बाबा श्रद्धालुओं के हैं. उनके मंदिर और आश्रम आस्था, सेवा और आध्यात्मिक शुचिता के प्रतीक हैं. किसी भी व्यक्ति को संस्था से बड़ा बनने की अनुमति नहीं दी जानी चाहिए और किसी विवादित पदाधिकारी को बाबा के नाम पर किसी भी प्रकार की छाया पड़ने की अनुमति नहीं दी जानी चाहिए.
जैसे हनुमान अंश बाबा की कहानी को भारत के सिनेमाघरों से लेकर विदेशों में दर्शकों तक पहुंचा रही है, शर्मा की मांग अब ट्रस्टियों के सामने एक बिल्कुल अलग सवाल रखती है.
जब बाबा का दिव्य जीवन हृदय की शुचिता और मानवता की सेवा की मांग करता है, तो क्या गंभीर अनुत्तरित सवालों का सामना कर रहे किसी व्यक्ति को बाबा के पवित्र नाम वाले ट्रस्ट की कुर्सी पर बने रहने की अनुमति दी जानी चाहिए?
